A Step Closer to Legal Registration!Monday, 10 April 2017 14:05 Written by Tamrat Gebregiorgis
Members of the Bole Beshale Sunshine Homeowners Association have held their founding assembly, this time around in the presence of an official from the Bole District Office.
Despite an earlier effort to form the association, after endorsing its by-laws, part of the legal registration process required the founding assembly and elections of a board of directors carried out afresh. There is also an addition of audit committee to the association elected on Sunday, April 9, 2017.
Close to 106 homeowners have petitioned the District, applying for registration of the association with the proper authorities, under Article 370 of cooperatives law issued in 2003. The District sent out one of its officials, Ato Menda Seyoum, to attend the founding assembly where 78 homeowners or their legal representatives have attended, a larger number than the legally required 51% in attendance.
“Despite the proposed articles of association by the District Office, it`s the by-laws of your own association that are most important in governing your internal affairs,” Ato Menda told the assembly.
The draft articles of association proposed by the District Office, a standard format used for all homeowners and cooperatives applying for registrations, comprises a composition of both executive and audit committees, determines registration and monthly membership fees and incorporates the name of the association with its logo.
There was an animated debate over the amount of registration and monthly fees, where some members proposed 50 Birr for the first and 70 Birr for the latter. However, the association`s earlier founding assembly had agreed on a 300 Birr monthly contribution has been reaccepted, while the registration fee of 50 Birr was endorsed with little disagreement.
An electoral committee of three - Ato Amare, Ato Ephrem and Ato Haileab - took over the process that followed the discussion on substantive matters, and proceeded to receive nominations both for the board of directors and audit committee members.
Close to nine members were nominated for the board of directors: Ato Negede, Ato Solomon, Ato Tegegn, Wro. Tadesech, Ato Tamrat, Wro Azagn, Ato Yaregal, Ato Alemayehu and Ato Gebeyehu. While Ato Alemayehu and Ato Solomon received the lowest number of votes, the other seven were elected to serve on the board of directors for two years. Nonetheless, Ato Alemayehu has been elected to the audit committee, alongside Ato Zeray and Ato Seyifu.
Ato Solomon Taye and Ato Solomon Zegeye were also nominated for the audit committee.
The founding assembly held last Sunday and the subsequent elections of the association’s officers serve as a landmark phase where the Bole Beshale Sunshine Homeowners’ Association gets its legal standing, a prerequisite for its functions.
